SafeWAChat (“the Extension”, “we”, “us”) is a browser extension that blurs messages, media, and related interface elements on WhatsApp Web until the user hovers over them. This Privacy Policy explains what information the Extension handles and how it is treated.

By installing or using SafeWAChat, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please uninstall the Extension.

2. Single purpose

SafeWAChat has a single, narrow purpose: to protect the user’s privacy on WhatsApp Web by blurring chat content until the user chooses to reveal it. All features of the Extension exist solely to support this purpose.

3. Information we collect

We do not collect personal data.

In particular, SafeWAChat does not collect, transmit, or store:

Message content, media, or conversation history
Contact names, phone numbers, or profile information
Personally identifiable information (name, email, address, etc.)
Location, IP address, or device identifiers for tracking
Browsing history outside WhatsApp Web
Authentication credentials or payment information
Analytics, advertising identifiers, or usage telemetry sent to external servers

4. Local settings only

The Extension may store preference settings on your device using the browser’s storage API (for example: which elements to blur, blur intensity, selective contact lists, and whether the Extension is enabled). These settings:

Remain on your device (and may sync via your browser account if you use sync)
Are used only to apply your chosen privacy options
Are never sent to our servers — we operate no backend that receives this data

5. How the Extension works on the page

To apply blur effects, SafeWAChat runs only on https://web.whatsapp.com/*. It may read elements of the page (such as message containers or media) locally in your browser solely to apply visual blurring. This processing happens entirely on your device. No page content is uploaded, logged, or shared.

6. Permissions

The Extension requests only the permissions needed for its single purpose:

Host access to WhatsApp Web — to blur content on that site only
storage — to save your blur preferences locally
activeTab — to update blur on the current tab when you change settings

No other permissions are requested.

7. Third parties

SafeWAChat does not integrate advertising networks, analytics services, or other third-party trackers. We do not sell, rent, or transfer user data to third parties.

WhatsApp Web is operated by Meta Platforms, Inc. Your use of WhatsApp is governed by Meta’s own terms and privacy policy. SafeWAChat is an independent, unofficial extension and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by WhatsApp or Meta.

8. Children’s privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Extension, please contact us so we can help address the situation.

9. Data security

Because SafeWAChat does not transmit your message content or personal data to external servers, the primary security boundary is your own device and browser. We recommend keeping your browser and operating system up to date and using device-level protections appropriate to your needs.

10. International users

The Extension is designed to function without collecting personal data, regardless of where you are located. Local settings remain under the control of your browser and device.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will reflect the latest revision. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
